Description
Harpers Ferry is now best known for radical abolitionist John Brown's 1859 raid on the arsenal there but it was the site of a United States Armory and Arsenal built in 1799 as well as a growing industrial center. Meriwether Lewis traveled there in 1803 for the weapons and hardware he needed for the transcontinental expedition. The Chesapeake & Ohio Canal reached linked the village with Washington, D.C., in 1833 and the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad began service there a year later. This fire station became John Brown's fort. The Torrent Fire/Engine Company took the bell back to Marlborough, MA, where it remains.
