Artist's Description

What we call "chugs" wash up from time to time on the beaches of the Keys. The boatbuilders work with scavenged materials from junked cars, crates, roofs, packing. Salvaged engines have only one direction: north. The engines run at a chuggita chuggata low speed slowly propelling people who hope for the best when they leave everything behind. This chug arrived on Coco Plum in 2013. It is unique in construction with a welded rebar space frame, metal roof panels hammered into shape, and styrofoam blocks as flotation and deck combined.

About R B Harper

R B Harper

"The girls say I'm pretty easy; I can be had for most anything with wheels, keels, or terabytes." Dick Harper says. Dick is a contributing columnist for New England’s oldest afternoon daily. A barefoot, outdoor and nature photographer, he has fine art and stock photography from New England, the Atlantic coastal states, Florida, and the American Southwest. "I'm serendipitous," he says. "I'll sit on a site waiting for the superlative sun but I'm just as happy to have a walk around body when I see a speedboat on my street." Click the...
